A rule that you should set to yourself is to always read some reviews before you buy a game, for instance, Excite truck got a mere 5/10 in a professional Swedish reviewing magazine/website, Gamereactor.
As for game recommendations, Twilight Princess is a must (rated 10/10 in a shitload of reviews, but then again so was Mario Galaxy).
